Scarborough
is one of the oldest settlements on the New England coast, dating to the middle 1600s. It is a peaceful, seaside community conveniently located in southern Maine, seven miles south of Portland. The town of Scarborough has beaches, parks, open space and recreational areas available for visitors, and it is also just a short drive to Crescent Beach State Park, Two Lights State Park and Old Orchard Beach. Scarborough is home to artist Winslow Homer who made this rocky coastline and it's sandy beaches famous in his paintings. Homer's studio is available for tours by appointment. There are three distinct coastal areas within the Scarborough city limits; Higgins Beach and its' quaint cottages that date to the beginning of the 20th century, the rocky coastline at Prouts Neck and the protected waters of Pine Point. Another point of interest in town is the Scarborough Marsh, which is Maine's largest marsh, and the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center, which are both open to the public during the warmer months. Swimming, hiking, biking, walks along the beach, searching for shells, sunbathing and surfing are all available in Scarborough, and for more action, Old Orchard Beach Amusement Park is just a short drive south of town.

The Portland area, along the southern seacoast, has very pleasant summers and falls, cold winters and changeable springs. Very few summer nights are too warm and humid for comfortable sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days and the least cloudiness. Winters can often extend into normal springtime. Heavy seasonal snowfalls of over 100 inches occur about every 10 years. True blizzards are area in Maine. Although cold, temperatures in this part of Maine are generally not as frigid as further north in the state. Cold waves sometimes are accompanied by strong winds, but extremely cold temperatures are usually accompanied by light winds. Fog along the coast is sometimes a factor in the weather during the summer months of June, July and August.
