Old-Orchard-Beach is a few miles north of Biddeford along Highway 9 in southwest Maine. This 7-mile stretch of beach with an amusement park looks like a small Coney Island. During the 1940s and 1950s, during the Big Band era, there was a dance hall on the pier at Old Orchard Beach where the popular bands performed. Fire claimed the end of the pier, but today, booths and midway games, a video arcade, gift shops, restaurants and even a palm reader line up along both sides. There are kiddie rides and adult rides, Maine's largest waterslide and the states' only wooden roller coaster located at Old Orchard Beach. In summertime, free weekly concerts are performed on the Town Square, and starting in June, the town sponsors fireworks every Thursday night on the beach right next to the pier. Just a few of the other fun things to do in Old Orchard Beach include miniature golf, all types of beach activities, kayaking, deep-sea fishing, whale watching tours, lobster boat tours and Bay View cruises. A short drive south of Old Orchard Beach takes you to the Biddeford Pool & Wood Island Lighthouse with its spectacular views of the shoreline. A little further south is the Kennebunkport Dock Square, with its' unique gift shops, galleries and restaurants.

The southwestern coast of Maine, near "The Kennebunks" and the New Hampshire border, has a four season climate that is highly changeable, that is, it can go from sunny to stormy rather quickly. Generally, summers are a few degrees warmer than further up the coast, near Acadia National Park, however summer temperatures still seldom go above 80 degrees F. Thunderstorms are possible and fog is common along the coast in June, July and August. . The average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. In September, clear, sunny days and cool nights bring on the spectacular colors of fall. Temperatures continue to cool down through October and November, with wintry weather arriving around Thanksgiving time. Winters are cold in Maine, but not unbearable, and the generally snow melts quickly in areas right along the coast.
