Peaks-Island
is one of over 211 islands located in Casco Bay approximately three miles from Portland, Maine. It's a short 15-20 minute ferry ride from the mainland on the Casco Bay Lines to this picturesque island where roughly 1,000 people call home. In summer months, that population swells to 5,000 - 6,000, so if crowds are not to your liking, plan to visit before July or in the fall, which is quite beautiful on Peaks Island. It makes a really nice day trip if you are visiting the Portland area, or you can plan to stay for a week or more. There are several small businesses on Peaks Island, a general store, arts and crafts galleries, an ice cream and souvenir shop, restaurants and other services. Things to do include hiking around the island, which can be done in about an hour, or you can bring your own bike or rent one to explore the island that way. Half of the round trip around Peaks Island weaves through residential areas, but the other half goes right alongside the ocean with plenty of beautiful views, rocky shoreline with crashing waves, and benches for sitting a spell to rest and watch the scene. Sailing, kayaking, and picnicking are other options available. Other points of interest include nearby Long Point Peninsula, a local Civil War museum and all the shops and restaurants across the Bay at Portland Harbor.

The Portland area, along the southern seacoast, has very pleasant summers and falls, cold winters and changeable springs. Very few summer nights are too warm and humid for comfortable sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days and the least cloudiness. Winters can often extend into normal springtime. Heavy seasonal snowfalls of over 100 inches occur about every 10 years. True blizzards are area in Maine. Although cold, temperatures in this part of Maine are generally not as frigid as further north in the state. Cold waves sometimes are accompanied by strong winds, but extremely cold temperatures are usually accompanied by light winds. Fog along the coast is sometimes a factor in the weather during the summer months of June, July and August.
