Portland
is the largest city in Maine and is located along the state's southern Atlantic coastline. Built on a narrow peninsula overlooking the islands of Casco Bay, Portland was founded in 1632. A great fire on July 4, 1866 destroyed much of the city, but it was soon rebuilt and became one of the finest harbors on the East Coast. Portland is a city with a friendly, small town charm, with cobblestone streets, historic landmarks, art galleries, unique shops and restaurants. The coast, lakes and streams of the Portland area provide ample opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, white-water rafting, mountain climbing, skiing and golf and more. You can visit nearby lighthouses, and take a cruise to one of the Casco Bay Islands. Just a few of the other interesting things to see in this city include the Portland Observatory built in 1807, the Children's Museum of Maine, the Portland Museum of Art and the Wadsworth Longfellow House. The latter is the boyhood home of the poet and the first brick home built in Portland. Also, take some time to wander along the Old Port waterfront, which is full of arts and crafts shops, galleries, boutiques, bookstores and restaurants. Be sure to drive out to Cape Elizabeth, a Portland suburb that juts out into the Atlantic, and home to Two Lights, one of the cape's three lighthouses. The historic Portland Head Light, located approximately two miles from the center of town, was commissioned by President George Washington in 1791 and has walking paths and picnic facilities.

The Portland area, along the southern seacoast, has very pleasant summers and falls, cold winters and changeable springs. Very few summer nights are too warm and humid for comfortable sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days and the least cloudiness. Winters can often extend into normal springtime. Heavy seasonal snowfalls of over 100 inches occur about every 10 years. True blizzards are area in Maine. Although cold, temperatures in this part of Maine are generally not as frigid as further north in the state. Cold waves sometimes are accompanied by strong winds, but extremely cold temperatures are usually accompanied by light winds. Fog along the coast is sometimes a factor in the weather during the summer months of June, July and August.
