North-Haven-Vinalhaven-Islands
are two small islands in the Penobscot Bay just off the coast of Maine that are accessed by a ferry that departs daily from the town of Rockland. Along the way, you'll have time to sit back and relax and enjoy the spectacular views of the Camden Hills and coastline. The two islands are separated by a narrow strip of water and the summer homes of many residents dot the scenic shoreline as you make your way to the harbor. In Vinalhaven, many parks are within walking distance of the ferry dock. Lane's Island Preserve is a 40-acre site of moors, granite shoreline, tide pools and beach. You can learn about the islands quarrying history at the Historical Museum in Vinalhaven, and you can even swim in the cool waters of some of the quarries. Both islands are perfect for walking and exploring, and other activities include biking, sailing, canoeing, fishing, tennis, golf, and picnicking. You'll find all of the necessary amenities on New Haven and Vinalhaven, as well as several gift shops and art galleries. Across the Bay in Rockland, specialty shops and galleries, restaurants and inns line Main Street and side streets. Rockland is considered the working hub of this area of the coast, and you'll see fishing boats moored alongside yachts and windjammers in its harbor. Other points of interest include the Farnsworth Art Museum, Shore Village Museum and the Owls Head Transportation Museum.

The southern coast of Maine near the Penobscot Bay has very comfortable summers and falls, cold winters with frequent thaws and late, changeable springs. Summers are mild to cool by most people's standards, with very few summer nights too warm and humid for sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days along the coast and is perfect for fall sightseeing. Winters are cold, but not as severe as the northeastern part of the state along the Canadian border. The White Mountains, to the northwest, keep considerable snow from reaching the Portland area and also help moderate the temperature. Normal precipitation is remarkably uniform throughout the year. Winds are generally light with the strongest being in the months of March and November. Temperatures well below freezing are reported each year, and cold waves sometimes come along with strong winds. Blizzards are possible but infrequent in Maine.
