Stonington
is a scenic fishing village situated on the southern end of Deer Isle. It's reached by a suspension bridge and causeway over the Eggemoggin Reach from Blue Hill Peninsula. Deer Isle has no neon signs or fast food restaurants - and usually no crowds. The village of Stonington is a real working harbor town and boasts that this is where you can buy lobster "right off the boat." It's the largest community on Deer Isle, but even so, it offers the perfect escape for those looking for lots of peace and quiet and unbeatable ocean scenery. The bounty of the sea has been a way of life in Stonington for generations, and as with other working harbors, pleasure boaters are also welcomed guests in Stonington Harbor. There are quite a few very good restaurants in Stonington that feature a variety of cuisine, including, of course, world famous Deer Isle lobster. The whole island is known for its antique shops and art galleries, gift and bookstores. Boats trips leave daily from Stonington to Isle au Haut, which is part of Acadia National Park and other activities include lobster boat races, canoeing, kayaking, deep sea fishing, hiking and biking - or just enjoying the incredible scenery. Deer Isle has a wide variety of lodging, including cozy bed and breakfasts, motels, historic inns and campgrounds. The famous Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is also located on Deer Isle.

"Downeast Maine," along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a variable climate that can change quickly at any time. This area, which includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, has four distinct seasons where summer temperatures can range from 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Fog is quite common during the summer months, as well, but there is also plenty of sunshine. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter rain in any month, and ice storms are regular in the winter and early spring. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow tends to melt quickly along the coast - more continuous snow can be found inland.
