Deer Isle/Little Deer Isle
is thought by some to be one of Maine’s best-kept secrets. It is reached by a suspension bridge and causeway over the Eggemoggin Reach from Blue Hill Peninsula. The picturesque village of Deer Isle, on the island of Deer Isle, has no neon signs, no fast food restaurants and no crowds. The whole island is known for its art galleries and shops and is home to many artists, writers and craftspeople. The famous Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is also located on Deer Isle. The largest community on the island is Stonington where you can buy lobster “right off the boat!” And other towns with colorful names such as Sunshine and Sunset are places that are much like they were 50 years ago. Things to do on the island include canoeing and kayaking, fishing, walking, hiking, and beachcombing, or just exploring the island roads that meander around and about the bays and island inlets. Excursion boats are available to Isle au Haut, which is part of Acadia National Park, and the more upscale towns of Blue Hill and Bar Harbor are just a short drive away on the mainland.
