Vinalhaven
is a scenic island that lies about 15 miles off the fog-prone inlet of Penobscot Bay on the mid-coast of Maine. It is accessible only by ferry from the town of Rockland, and is the largest of the Bay's numerous Fox Islands, separated from the island of North Haven by a narrow strip of water. Encircling these two larger islands are ten smaller uninhabited islands that are perfect for a day of exploring and picnicking. Lobster fishing is the mainstay of Vinalhaven, and a small village of the same name is located on the southern shore of the island and is the center of the commercial activity. Vinalhaven is a working island, but does contain many hiking and biking trails, a historic lighthouse, a number of nature preserves, a town playground and several miscellaneous businesses. There are also several fresh water quarries on the island that are good for swimming (and much warmer than the ocean.) Many parks are within walking distance of the ferry dock and offer tennis, golf, sailing, canoeing, fishing and picnicking. However, Vinalhaven is somewhat remote and there are few tourist amenities on the island, but across the Bay in the town of Rockland, you'll find gift shops and art galleries, restaurants and inns. Other nearby points of interest include the Shore Village Museum, Farnsworth Art Museum and the Owls Head Transportation Museum.

The southern coast of Maine near the Penobscot Bay has very comfortable summers and falls, cold winters with frequent thaws and late, changeable springs. Summers are mild to cool by most people's standards, with very few summer nights too warm and humid for sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days along the coast and is perfect for fall sightseeing. Winters are cold, but not as severe as the northeastern part of the state along the Canadian border. The White Mountains, to the northwest, keep considerable snow from reaching the Portland area and also help moderate the temperature. Normal precipitation is remarkably uniform throughout the year. Winds are generally light with the strongest being in the months of March and November. Temperatures well below freezing are reported each year, and cold waves sometimes come along with strong winds. Blizzards are possible but infrequent in Maine.
