Rockland
is called the "Lobster Capital of the World," and is famous for its' annual Maine Lobster Festival, a tradition for over 50 years, and usually held in August. The town is located northeast of Portland between the cities of Damariscotta and Rockport along U.S. Highway 1. This region along the middle coast Maine is known for its' quaint fishing villages, rocky coastline with hundreds of harbors and inlets and some of the best waters for sailing and boating. A mile-long granite breakwater protects Rockland Harbor, making it one of the best recreational harbors on the East Coast and home to more windjammers than any other port in the country. As an entry point to beautiful Penobscot Bay, Rockland offers everything from day trips to weeklong excursions to the outer islands in the Bay. Rockland's downtown has been designated a National Historic District, and Main Street is lined with boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops and fine restaurants. Other points of interest include the Wyeth Center, Farnsworth Homestead and Art Museum, and the Shore Village Museum, nicknamed "America's Lighthouse Museum," which houses exhibits of U.S. Coast Guard relics. All this combines to make Rockland an excellent choice for a midcoast Maine vacation.

The southern coast of Maine near the Penobscot Bay has very comfortable summers and falls, cold winters with frequent thaws and late, changeable springs. Summers are mild to cool by most people's standards, with very few summer nights too warm and humid for sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days along the coast and is perfect for fall sightseeing. Winters are cold, but not as severe as the northeastern part of the state along the Canadian border. The White Mountains, to the northwest, keep considerable snow from reaching the Portland area and also help moderate the temperature. Normal precipitation is remarkably uniform throughout the year. Winds are generally light with the strongest being in the months of March and November. Temperatures well below freezing are reported each year, and cold waves sometimes come along with strong winds. Blizzards are possible but infrequent in Maine.
