Matinicus-Island
is located approximately 20 miles from the mainland of Maine and is not for those looking for a lot of action or nightlife. There is a distinct sense of isolation on the island, and according to the 2000 census, the population on the whole island is only 51 adults. Therefore, if you are looking for a place with plenty of space and peace and quiet, Matinicus Island is for you. There are a few amenities on Matinicus Island, but it's not set up for tourists, so don't expect a lot in the way of restaurants, shops or children's attractions. This is a place to relax and enjoy the sunrise in the morning, walk to the docks and watch the fishermen steaming out to sea, or to visit the local farmer's market for fresh produce and bakery items. There are other things to do, such as hiking on paths through the woods or walking along the beach (which is usually deserted,) swimming, fishing and taking a boat ride to nearby Criehaven Island and Matinicus Rock Island to see the puffins. Transportation to the island from the mainland is by state ferry, private boats and airplane. This is a true island getaway, and provides an ideal environment for those seeking a place for inner reflection or quiet solitude.

The southern coast of Maine near the Penobscot Bay has very comfortable summers and falls, cold winters with frequent thaws and late, changeable springs. Summers are mild to cool by most people's standards, with very few summer nights too warm and humid for sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days along the coast and is perfect for fall sightseeing. Winters are cold, but not as severe as the northeastern part of the state along the Canadian border. The White Mountains, to the northwest, keep considerable snow from reaching the Portland area and also help moderate the temperature. Normal precipitation is remarkably uniform throughout the year. Winds are generally light with the strongest being in the months of March and November. Temperatures well below freezing are reported each year, and cold waves sometimes come along with strong winds. Blizzards are possible but infrequent in Maine.
