Skowhegan
is located in central Maine and is known as "The Cross-Roads of Maine," "the Economic Heart of Central Maine," and "The Jumping Off Point for Maine's North Woods." You can take your pick - they are all an apt description for this lovely, vibrant city of 9,000 - which has one of the strongest economies in the state. The name "Skowhegan" means "A Place to Watch," and early Abnaki Indians chose this name due to its' location on the bend in the Kennebec River Gorge where they could watch the salmon coming upstream. The town of Skowhegan is actually the hub of both the Kennebec and Moose River Valleys. Visitors enjoy a multitude of activities on the rivers and the country backroads, such as fishing, white water rafting, boating, hiking and biking. The city is home to The Skowhegan Fair, which is the nation's longest running agricultural fair, and is Maine's largest outdoor event (held each year in August.) Other attractions include an old-fashioned 4th of July Celebration, and the Skowhegan History House, which holds over a thousand historic artifacts such as books, pictures, tools, maps, garments, machines and more. Right in downtown Skowhegan, a swinging footbridge leads to an island in the middle of the river and offers spectacular views of the Kennebec River and nearby falls. The Skowhegan School of Painting is also located here and many local artists and craftspeople have shops and galleries located in the town. Also, don't miss the world's largest Indian sculpture, a tribute to the early Maine tribes who grew crops on nearby banks.

Skowhegan Weather & Climate
The central mountains region of Maine, just north of Augusta, has four delightful seasons with spectacular foliage in the autumn months. The overall climate is moderate with summer daytime highs in the 70s and low 80s and cool nights. Winters are cold but usually not frigid. Spring and autumn are mild during the day, with crisp, cool nights. The really cold weather begins arriving around the end of November with January and February generally having the lowest temperatures. Below zero temperatures are possible, but not the norm. Accumulating snow is a possibility into March and early April, but the warmer days of spring generally means it melts fast. Rain can occur anytime of the year, and is usually spread pretty evenly throughout the season.
