Saco
and its' sister city, Biddeford, are called "The scenic twin cities of Southern Maine." It is located in the southwest corner of the state, along Highway 1 near the Saco River and the Atlantic seacoast. This area is blessed with ten miles of beautiful shoreline and ten miles of riverfront, historic villages and lighthouses, amusement parks, rolling farmlands and farmer's markets. In a recent issue of "Downeast Magazine," the city of Saco was called a "hidden gem," and given rave reviews for its' small town character, special community events, and its' revitalized downtown area. Ferry Beach State Park is located in Saco, and features 117 acres with miles of white sand beach with swimming, nature trails, guided nature tours and picnic areas. Other recreational activities in the area include sea kayaking and canoeing, boating and fishing, hiking and biking, golf and birdwatching. The Saco Farmers Market is held during spring, summer and fall in the parking lot of the Saco Valley Shopping Center and features area produce and Maine made products and specialty foods. Other area attractions include the East Point Sanctuary Nature Preserve, the Biddeford Pool & Wood Island Lighthouse, Fortunes Rocks Beach, Hills Beach and the Kennebunkport Dock Square. Just a short drive from Saco is popular Old Orchard Beach, one of the best-loved amusement parks in New England, which offers rides, midway games, restaurants, shops and fireworks along its' oceanfront pier.

The southwestern coast of Maine, near "The Kennebunks" and the New Hampshire border, has a four season climate that is highly changeable, that is, it can go from sunny to stormy rather quickly. Generally, summers are a few degrees warmer than further up the coast, near Acadia National Park, however summer temperatures still seldom go above 80 degrees F. Thunderstorms are possible and fog is common along the coast in June, July and August. . The average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. In September, clear, sunny days and cool nights bring on the spectacular colors of fall. Temperatures continue to cool down through October and November, with wintry weather arriving around Thanksgiving time. Winters are cold in Maine, but not unbearable, and the generally snow melts quickly in areas right along the coast.
