Newcastle
and Damariscotta are called the "Twin Villages" and are ideally situated near the head of the Damariscotta River in Lincoln County, just twelve miles from the ocean. The "Villages" offer a wide range of attractions, from pine-bordered lakes and tidal rivers to the sandy beaches of the Atlantic. Both are typical, charming New England style towns, full of unique shops, quaint architecture and fine dining. Just a few of the things to see in the Newcastle area include boat trips to Monhegan Island or Boothbay Harbor, Pemaquid Lighthouse Park, Pemaquid Beach Park, the antique shops of Wiscasset and the Rockland/Camden area (just thirty minutes away.) For outdoor recreation, Newcastle has uncrowded golf courses, fishing (both fresh water and deep-sea, plus ice fishing,) boating, sailing, canoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing and other winter sports. One canoe trip in the area covers fifty miles through both fresh and salt water, and excursion boats visit the many islands and harbors of the region on a regular basis. For children, there is the Lonna Bunting Childrens Playground and the Central Lincoln County Family Recreational Center, which provides all types of indoor activity throughout the year. Both Newcastle and Damariscotta were included in the Pemaquid Patent of 1629 and contain many beautiful houses and buildings of the Colonial period. A very unique point of interest is the "Oyster Shell Heaps" along the river, which record Indian gatherings through hundreds of centuries.

Mid-coast Maine, east of Brunswick, has an oceanic climate with four seasons. This area has an elevation of approximately 70 feet above sea level and is surrounded by rolling farmlands, forest areas, numerous islands, peninsulas, bays and beaches. Winter temperatures generally range from 0 to 40 degrees F. and while accumulating snow remains a possibility into March and early April, warmer days generally means relatively fast melts. . Ice storms can also occur in winter and early spring. Summers along the coast are cool, with temperatures in the 60 to 80 degrees range. Nights are usually chilly along the coast, year round. Rain can occur in any month of the year, with thunderstorms most common during the spring and summer months. Crisp, sunny days and cool nights make fall one of the most pleasant times of the year along the mid-coast, a very comfortable and colorful time of the year to visit Maine.
