Alna
is a small historical town that was incorporated in 1794 as “New Milford.” The name was later changed to Alna, Latin for the Alders, which grow abundantly in the area. The village of Alna is just five miles from Darmariscotta Lake, which is situated in the south, mid-coast region of the state. Alna has both historical attractions and easy access to tons of outdoor recreational activities. It is the site of the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum, which was a two-foot narrow gauge railroad that operated between Wiscasset and Albion between 1894 and 1933. Train rides are available for visitors to the museum. Another interesting site to see in Alna is the Alna Center Schoolhouse, which is the second oldest one-room schoolhouse in the state of Maine, and is open to the public in summer on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. The Old Head Tide Church Museum and historical site is also located in Alna, built in 1938 and in its’ original, untouched condition. Outdoor recreational activities located in or near Alna include swimming, boating, fly-fishing and saltwater fishing, canoeing, lake kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

The Kennebec and Damariscotta River region, located along mid-coast Maine, has a moderate climate that is greatly influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. This area has an elevation of 70 feet above sea level and is surrounded by rolling farmlands, forest areas, numerous islands, peninsulas, bays and beaches. Winter temperatures generally range from 0 to 40 degrees F. and summer from 50 to 85 degrees F. Nights are usually chilly, even in the middle of summer. Average rainfall totals 40 inches, with snowfall totaling 75 inches. Ice storms can occur in winter and early spring, but ice and snow tends to melt quickly along the coast. Rain can occur in any month of the year, and thunderstorms are possible in the summertime. Crisp, sunny days and cool nights make fall one of the most pleasant times of the year along the mid-coast.
