Machias
is located in remote Washington County in "Downeast Maine." The area has been called the "last frontier of peace, beauty, quietness, and clear, clean air." Settled in 1763, the town of Machias sits along the pristine Machias River, and is the site of the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War. The Burnham Tavern, which was the town's gathering place during the War, is now a museum. The Gates House Museum in neighboring Machiasport preserves the area's seafaring past. All seasons are beautiful in Machias, and there is much to do here; sea kayaking, charter boat tours and birdwatching excursions, beachcombing, swimming, canoeing and fishing in Machias Bay and Little Machias Bay. For hikers there are the well-maintained trails of the Cutler Coast Trail and Western Head Trail, West Quoddy Head Trails in Lubec and the Great Wass Island trails in the Jonesport area. The town of Machias also maintains several recreational facilities including tennis courts, Bad Little Falls Park on the Machias River, and a downtown boat launching facility. Bicycling and golf are also available in Machias and in the wintertime, ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling are popular. As you would expect in an area that produces 85% of the world's blueberries, Machias holds an annual Wild Blueberry Festival in August, with a blueberry baking contest, a parade, fish fry, crafts fair, blueberry pie eating contest and more.

Machias Weather & Climate

The easternmost area of the United States is Washington County, Maine, which is also one of the most remote areas of Maine. There are four seasons, although summers are very mild and air conditioning is not necessary in this part of the state. The greatest rise and fall of tides on the shores of the continental U.S. occur along the Washington County coastline, and it is the first place in the country to see the sunrise each day. The Maine coastal climate receives lots of precipitation - in every form. Ice storms are regular in winter and early spring, and rain is frequent in every month of the year. The average annual rainfall is 48 inches and the average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow does not stay on the ground as long along the coast as it does further inland and in northern Maine. There are plenty of clear, sunny days in summer and fall, followed by crisp, cold nights. Fog is common during June, July and August.
