Beals-Island
and Jonesport are two small fishing villages in "Down East" Maine that are joined together by a bridge over the harbor. You can walk the bridge to Jonesport and get a close up look at a working waterfront, where lobster boats and lobster gear line the shore and boats weave in and out of the harbor. Beals Island is known for their birding, which is superb. You can take a boat from here on day trips to nearby Machias Seal Island where there is a large puffin colony. Or visit the Great Wass Island Preserve, a 1500-acre nature conservancy at the tip of Beals Island. And just beyond the conservancy is Roque Island with its mile long white sand beach. As you would expect along Maine's coastline, there are several excellent restaurants in the area featuring fresh fish and seafood. And, lodging in Beals Island is comfortable and affordable, a fraction of what you'd pay further up the coast. Beals Island is a part of Maine where the cities seem far, far away and fishing and lobstering are all important. It's a land where wildlife is abundant, including seals and ospreys, and bald eagles, and traffic and crowds are nonexistent.

Beals Island Weather & Climate
The easternmost area of the United States is Washington County, Maine, which is also one of the most remote areas of Maine. There are four seasons, although summers are very mild and air conditioning is not necessary in this part of the state. The greatest rise and fall of tides on the shores of the continental U.S. occur along the Washington County coastline, and it is the first place in the country to see the sunrise each day. The Maine coastal climate receives lots of precipitation - in every form. Ice storms are regular in winter and early spring, and rain is frequent in every month of the year. The average annual rainfall is 48 inches and the average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow does not stay on the ground as long along the coast as it does further inland and in northern Maine. There are plenty of clear, sunny days in summer and fall, followed by crisp, cold nights. Fog is common during June, July and August.
