Cutler is a small working harbor village of approximately 400 residents that is east of the historic town of Machias off Route 191. An island sits at the mouth of the harbor at Cutler, keeping it well protected in almost all weather conditions, and providing a picturesque spot for excursion vessels. Cutler is considered the best place from which to sail to Machias Seal Island and Grand Manan, located six miles offshore. This little village began during Maine's golden shipbuilding era between 1845-1855. Today it is a peaceful, quiet place from which to experience the workings of a real "Downeast" fishing community. Watch the boats head in with their catch, or explore the beautiful headlands at the entrance to Little River. You can also charter a boat for a trip to Machias Seal Island to view the puffins, razorbills, Common Murres and Arctic Terns. Other outdoor activities in the Cutler area include hiking, rock climbing, fishing, boating, sailing, whale watching, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Cutler is part of Washington County, which is considered to have the most unspoiled rugged coastline in Downeast Maine.

Cutler Weather & Climate

The eastern seacoast of Maine near the Canadian border, which includes the towns of Lubec, Alexander and Jonesport has an extreme oceanic climate with cool temperatures, wind and fog. Fog is especially likely to form when warm, moist air meets the cold air here. The fog and wind help spread the boggy growth over the thin soil and rocky outcroppings of the area. Washington County is the first spot in the United States to see the sunrise every morning, and does not have the severe snowfalls or frigid cold of the northern regions. The coast does receive a lot of precipitation, however, in the form of rain, ice and snow. Summers along Maine's eastern seaboard are very mild, with chilly nights and daytime highs rarely going above 80 degrees F.
