Jefferson
is a small village that sits alongside Damariscotta Lake on mid-coast Maine about 90 minutes north of the city of Portland and 18 miles from the historic town of Wiscasset. The 14-mile long lake and surrounding State Park offer an abundance of activities and is the center of the resort activity in Lincoln County. On the northern tip of Damariscotta Lake, just below the town of Jefferson, is Damariscotta Lake State Park. The park is open Memorial Day through Labor Day and has excellent fishing, along with boating, swimming, kayaking and picnicking. The park also contains an old-fashioned playground for children, and has hiking, biking, birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Jefferson offers visitors the basic amenities and services, including a General Store, and nearby is the town of Damariscotta, a charming village with great seafood restaurants, gift shops and antique shops to explore. Other attractions in the area include the Colonial Pemaquid Historical Site and Fort Pemaquid. Acadia National Park is approximately an hour away from Jefferson, and other easy day trips include Boothbay Harbor, Monhegan Island, the town of Freeport with its' outlet shops and Wiscasset, which is well-known for its' antiques and arts and crafts shops.

The southern coast of Maine near the Penobscot Bay has very comfortable summers and falls, cold winters with frequent thaws and late, changeable springs. Summers are mild to cool by most people's standards, with very few summer nights too warm and humid for sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days along the coast and is perfect for fall sightseeing. Winters are cold, but not as severe as the northeastern part of the state along the Canadian border. The White Mountains, to the northwest, keep considerable snow from reaching the Portland area and also help moderate the temperature. Normal precipitation is remarkably uniform throughout the year. Winds are generally light with the strongest being in the months of March and November. Temperatures well below freezing are reported each year, and cold waves sometimes come along with strong winds. Blizzards are possible but infrequent in Maine.
