Eastport
is a small port city located on Moose Island in the historically rich region of eastern Washington County. It is connected to the mainland by a short causeway. Eastport is the first city in the country to see the rising sun, making it the easternmost town in the United States. Once a booming sardine fishing and canning site, the village of Eastport today produces millions of pounds of fresh farm raised Atlantic salmon each year. The region is comprised of unspoiled stretches of beautiful Maine coastline, cobblestone beaches, tidal coves, inland lakes and streams. In addition, there is an abundance of fascinating wildlife, such as moose and deer, bald eagles, whales, porpoises and seals. Eastport is home to the world's second largest whirlpool, called "Old Sow," and recreational activities in the area include hiking, sailing, golf, tennis, fishing, birding and whale watching. The town has a National Historic Waterfront District with a museum and several other buildings of historical significance open to the public for tours. In addition, Eastport is home to a large community of artists with art galleries, an arts center, a large co-op gallery and a very active community theater group.

The eastern seacoast of Maine near the Canadian border, which includes the towns of Lubec, Alexander and Jonesport has an extreme oceanic climate with cool temperatures, wind and fog. Fog is especially likely to form when warm, moist air meets the cold air here. The fog and wind help spread the boggy growth over the thin soil and rocky outcroppings of the area. Washington County is the first spot in the United States to see the sunrise every morning, and does not have the severe snowfalls or frigid cold of the northern regions. The coast does receive a lot of precipitation, however, in the form of rain, ice and snow. Summers along Maine's eastern seaboard are very mild, with chilly nights and daytime highs rarely going above 80 degrees F.
