Calais
is located in secluded Washington County, and although it has a population of less than 4,000, nonetheless it is the largest city in the county. It lies northeast of Bangor on the banks of the St. Croix River near the Canadian border. The town of Calais is considered the shopping and commerce center of Washington County, and, in addition, offers unparalleled outdoor recreational possibilities, such as canoeing, kayaking, boating and fishing on the St. Croix River. Calais' newest addition is Devil's Head, a 318 acre wilderness site that contains one mile of frontage on the St. Croix estuary, and includes a low tide sand and boulder beach, rich forestland, a granite headland and abundant wildlife. The following are just a few of the other attractions that are within a one-hour drive of the town of Calais: The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, Cabscook Bay State Park, Roques Bluff State Park, the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. The latter was dedicated as a memorial to the late President and offers 2,800 acres of bogs, beaches, salt marshes, forests, ponds and headlands, plus a 34-room "cottage" that was owned by the Roosevelts that is open to the public for tours. A short drive takes you to the many lighthouses of the area such as West Quoddy Head, Mullholland Point Light and Lubec Channel Light, and St. Croix Island is located about five miles south of Calais and is an International Historic Site.

Calais Weather & Climate
The eastern seacoast of Maine near the Canadian border has an extreme oceanic climate with cool temperatures, wind and fog. Fog is especially likely to form when warm, moist air meets the cold air here. The fog and wind help spread the boggy growth over the thin soil and rocky outcroppings of the area. Washington County is the first spot in the United States to see the sunrise every morning, and does not have the severe snowfalls or frigid cold of the other northern Maine regions. The coast does receive a lot of precipitation, however, in the form of rain, ice and snow. Summers along Maine's eastern seaboard are very mild, with chilly nights and daytime highs rarely going above 80 degrees F. A good place to escape to when the summer heat elsewhere becomes unbearable.
