Bancroft
is a tiny town of less than 1,000, located in beautiful, remote Aroostook County, which is located in the northeastern corner of the state, just six miles from the Canadian border. Bancroft is near the Mattawamkeag River, Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin. This is an area well known for its' hunting, bass and trout fishing, wilderness hikes and mountain climbing. Baxter State Park has over 204,000 acres of wilderness that surrounds Mt. Katahdin, which is Maine's highest mountain at 5,267 feet. The park also has 180 miles of trails, including the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. There are many lakes and rivers in the Bancroft area for swimming, whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, boating and fishing. In wintertime, ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are popular. Literally almost every kind of outdoor recreation, with the exception of ocean beach activities, are available in the area surrounding Bancroft. In fact, 89% of Aroostook County is State Park and forestland, making it well known for its excellent outdoor life. The nearby community of Island Falls is home to a well-known golf course, several arts and crafts stores, restaurants and a Historical Clothing Museum. The town of Houlton is the county seat for Aroostook County, just a half-hour drive from Bancroft, and offers more shopping and dining choices.

Maine's Northeast corner has four seasons and the weather is highly changeable -- it can go from sunny to stormy in short order. Summers near the Canadian border are cool, with highs in the 70s or sometimes reaching the low 80s. Interior areas experience a greater range of temperatures in the summer, but some nights in northern areas are still near freezing. Winters in Maine are cold - sometimes even frigid. January temperatures range from 11 to 31 F along the coast and 1 to 19 F inland. The snow is lovely, and if you aren't opposed to cold weather, wintertime is a great time to visit Maine. Continuous snow is generally on the ground from December through February and sometimes into March. Daytime highs gradually increase March through May. In September, the spectacular colors of fall blaze and sunny days and cool nights characterize this favorite season of many in Maine.
