Houlton
is located in southern Aroostook County, where things are "the way Maine used to be," and that means it's a rural treasure trove of wilderness, picturesque coves and harbors, small town ambiance and friendly people. Houlton is located on I-95 north and is bordered to the east by Canada. It's the county seat of Aroostook County and is the oldest community in the county, dating back to 1805. The town is small but has very nice restaurants and accommodations that are quiet and comfortable. The A.E. Howell Wildlife Conservation Center and Spruce Acres Refuge are located 14 miles south of Houlton, and is one of the largest and most successful wildlife facilities in the northeast. This is North Maine Woods Country, and Aroostook County is 89 percent forestland, which means outdoor recreation is at a premium here. In or near Houlton, you will find superb fishing, hiking, canoeing, white water rafting, and golf. Aroostook County has an exhilarating fifty-mile bike tour that takes cyclists through the heart of the landscape. In winter, it's time for sledding, ice fishing, alpine skiing and cross country skiing. You'll find many fun, family-oriented special events in Houlton such as the Moose Stompers Weekend in February, the Meduxnekeag River Canoe Race in April and the Houlton Arts & Crafts Fair in July.

Maine's Northeast corner has four seasons and the weather is highly changeable -- it can go from sunny to stormy in short order. Summers near the Canadian border are cool, with highs in the 70s or sometimes reaching the low 80s. Interior areas experience a greater range of temperatures in the summer, but some nights in northern areas are still near freezing. Winters in Maine are cold - sometimes even frigid. January temperatures range from 11 to 31 F along the coast and 1 to 19 F inland. The snow is lovely, and if you aren't opposed to cold weather, wintertime is a great time to visit Maine. Continuous snow is generally on the ground from December through February and sometimes into March. Daytime highs gradually increase March through May. In September, the spectacular colors of fall blaze and sunny days and cool nights characterize this favorite season of many in Maine.
