Richmond
is located in Sagadahoc County, 17 miles south of the state Capital of Augusta and just east of Lewiston. The small town of Richmond sits on the west side of the Kennebec River, and is at the center of the historic "Tidewater Kennebec Region." It is often referred to as "the hole in the donut," with the towns of Wiscasset, Bath, Brunswick, Lewiston, Auburn and Augusta surrounding it. Richmond began as a shipbuilding town, and sea captains, merchants and boat builders constructed a fine collection of temple style Greek Revival homes that has put the town on the National Register of Historic Districts. Peacock Beach State Park is located just off Route 201 in Richmond, and makes an ideal spot for a family outing. It has a nice picnic area and a small beach with a lifeguard on duty. The Kennebec River provides fishing, boating, hiking and biking opportunities, and Richmond is just 23 miles to the Atlantic seacoast and beach activities. Nearby Bath has the Maine Maritime Museum, Reid State Park and the Sagadahoc Preservation. And, the neighboring town of Lewiston is home to the annual Great Falls Balloon Festival and the Festival de Joie.

The Kennebec and Damariscotta River region, located along mid-coast Maine, has a moderate climate that is greatly influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. This area has an elevation of 70 feet above sea level and is surrounded by rolling farmlands, forest areas, numerous islands, peninsulas, bays and beaches. Winter temperatures generally range from 0 to 40 degrees F. and summer from 50 to 85 degrees F. Nights are usually chilly, even in the middle of summer. Average rainfall totals 40 inches, with snowfall totaling 75 inches. Ice storms can occur in winter and early spring, but ice and snow tends to melt quickly along the coast. Rain can occur in any month of the year, and thunderstorms are possible in the summertime. Crisp, sunny days and cool nights make fall one of the most pleasant times of the year along the mid-coast.
