Great Diamond Island is a short ferry ride from the city of Portland, but its’ spectacular beaches, old-growth forest and breathtaking views will make you feel as if you’re a world away from the mainland. Diamond Cove, on Great Diamond Island, has been attracting visitors and artists for centuries. Well known frequent visitors included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was also a military stronghold during the Spanish American War, where more than 1,000 soldiers were housed in Fort McKinley. The fort retired from active service in 1945, and today it has been restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Great Diamond Island is a secluded, private vacation destination that offers gourmet dining, swimming, sailing, hiking and tennis. A marina is located on the northern end of Great Diamond Island, and offers overnight dockage, as well as dinner or lunch dockage. A short ferry ride from the island takes you to other Casco Bay island communities such as Peaks Island, which is known for its’ arts and crafts shops and art galleries. Across the Bay, Portland’s Old Port Waterfront is full of boutiques, galleries, specialty shops, bookstores and restaurants. Other nearby attractions include Cape Elizabeth and the Two Lights and Portland Head Light Lighthouses.
