Franklin
is a small, quiet town located off the beaten path on the mid coast of Maine, approximately 45 minutes to Acadia National Park and the Bar Harbor region. The town began in the early 1800s, and for the next 100 years or so was a thriving lumber and shipbuilding town. Today, while even the city itself admits, "most people who visit Franklin are on their way to someplace else," the town does have its' own assets and makes an interesting and tranquil vacation spot. There are several ponds located here, including George's Pond, which is really a lake that is approximately one mile wide and one mile long and known for its' excellent fishing for bass, trout and perch. A public landing for launching boats is also located nearby. Other outdoor activities in Franklin include hiking, biking, swimming, horseback riding, and hunting and nearby miniature golf, a water park, go cart track and even live Lumberjack Shows. It's a good area for birdwatching and wildlife viewing, with abundant loons, eagles, wild turkeys, geese and other waterfowl and wildlife. The town is quaint, with no traffic lights and no major highways or interstates intersecting its' boundaries. There are no bars or nightlife in Franklin, but they do have a general store that sells just about everything you need. For anything you can't find there, the town of Ellsworth is just twelve miles away and has more shopping, antique stores, restaurants and other services.

Southeast Maine , along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a distinct four-season climate. This area, often referred to as "Downeast Maine," includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. Visitors are advised to come prepared for a variety of weather conditions in this part of Maine because the climate is highly changeable. Temperatures in summer can range as much as 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter fog or rain at any time. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. This moisture occurs in every form at Acadia National Park. Ice storms are regular in winter and early spring. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches.
