Oxford
is a small town of approximately 3,700, located in the hills of southwestern Maine. An old town settled in 1794, Oxford is part of the "Oxford Hills," a four-season recreational area surrounded by 33 pristine lakes, rivers and ponds. The Sunday River Ski Resort is located near Oxford, where skiing, snow shoeing and snowmobiling are popular sports in the wintertime. April 1st is the official start of fishing season and anglers can expect to catch landlocked salmon, small and large mouth bass, trout and perch. In summer, the mountains, lakes and rivers provide ample opportunities for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, boating, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking and camping. There are also two golf courses located in the Oxford Hills, and the Oxford Plains Speedway is located on Route 26. Fall is one of the most popular seasons in Maine, perfect for antiquing and fall color tours. Western Maine near the New Hampshire state line enjoy four distinct seasons that typifies the best of a New England climate. There's plenty of clear, sunny weather with cool nights in the summertime, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. Extreme humidity in summertime is usually not a problem because temperatures are so mild. Fall is spectacular - crisp, mild days and cold nights, perfect for sightseeing. Winter begins in Maine around Thanksgiving, with January and February being the coldest months. The average annual snowfall is around 85 inches and winter temperatures vary from the mid-30s to below zero. Most snowfall occurs in eight to ten measurable storms of 6 inches to a foot. In the last fifteen years, the largest single snowstorm amount was 16 inches. Temperatures begin to increase in March, along with an increase in humidity, which often results in snowstorms until mid-April.
