Lewiston
is Maine's second largest city and lies north of Portland along the banks of the Androscoggin River, midway between the ocean and the mountains. Lewiston and the city of Auburn are known as the "Twin Cities," and together they form the industrial heart of Maine. This ideal location makes it a perfect base for visiting all of the exciting southwestern Maine attractions, but there are plenty of things to see locally, as well. Start with a historical walking tour of the beautifully renovated downtown, or visit one of the area's many local parks, recreational facilities or golf courses. In Lewiston, you can shop 'till your heart's content in everything from downtown stores and malls to unique antiques and gifts shops, and dine on everything from fast food to fabulous Maine lobster! The Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary is located on 300 acres in Lewiston, and is a protected wildlife preserve open to the public for tours, birdwatching, picnics, hikes and demonstrations. Lewiston is also home to several special events throughout the year, including the Festival de Joie, an annual celebration of the area's Franco-American heritage and culture. This colorful event is usually held the first weekend of August. Also in August, the Great Falls Balloon Festival comes to Lewiston, where over 45 hot air balloonists from across the Northeast come for a weekend of on going fun activities for the whole family.

The Kennebec Valley region of southwestern Maine near the cities of Augusta and the sister cities of Lewiston and Auburn has four distinct seasons. Located approximately one hour from the seacoast and along the Kennebec River, the area is considered coastal, but it lacks the heavy fogs of the seashore towns. It is also far enough south that it is without the severe snowfalls and cold of the northern regions. The summer is comfortable, with perhaps a few days that reach as high as 90 degrees. Uncomfortably hot and humid weather is rare. Winters are moderately cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter.
