Greene is a town of about 4,000 residents located in Androscoggin County in southwestern Maine, about thirty minutes from both Portland and Augusta. Several lakes and ponds are in the area, including Sabattus Pond, Lake Auburn and Cochnewagon Lake. Sabattus Pond, in particular, is known for its' bass fishing, and other recreation in the area includes swimming, water skiing, wind surfing, golf, hiking, biking, camping, snorkeling and wildlife viewing. The picturesque Androscoggin River is a major tourist attraction and features fishing areas with boat launches and greenways and parks for hiking and picnicking along the river's edge. The "Twin Cities" of Lewiston and Auburn are only about fifteen minutes from the town of Greene, and offer unique shops, antique stores and restaurants featuring delicious Maine lobster. A half-hour's drive takes you to the capital city of Augusta or to Maine's largest city - Portland. Other attractions near Greene include the Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary, the Great Falls Balloon Festival in Lewiston, the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center, the Children's Museum of Maine, and the lighthouses and cruises of the Casco Bay Islands.

The Kennebec Valley region of southwestern Maine near the cities of Augusta and the sister cities of Lewiston and Auburn has four distinct seasons. Located approximately one hour from the seacoast and along the Kennebec River, the area is considered coastal, but it lacks the heavy fogs of the seashore towns. It is also far enough south that it is without the severe snowfalls and cold of the northern regions. The summer is comfortable, with perhaps a few days that reach as high as 90 degrees. Uncomfortably hot and humid weather is rare. Winters are moderately cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter.
