Frenchboro
is a very interesting vacation destination. This island town is located on Long Island in Blue Hill Bay, which sits approximately 8 miles out to sea from mainland Maine, near Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. Frenchboro Island, which was once partially owned by David Rockefeller, is about three miles wide by three miles long and has only one paved road. There are no red lights on the island, no stop signs and no stores, and only about 45 permanent year-round residents. The town of Frenchboro is actually made up of 14 islands, including Long Island, and Crow Island, Harbor Island, Mount Desert Rock, Great Duck Island, Little Duck Island, Black Island, Placentia, the two Green islands, Pond Island, the Eastern and Western Sister Islands, and Drum Island. Frenchboro offers a seasonal museum, a post office, a bed and breakfast inn and a restaurant. It's definitely for those looking for a remote vacation spot, because there is only limited ferry service to the mainland. Most of the island is undeveloped and unspoiled, with miles of well-maintained hiking trails that lead to various coves and beaches. Frenchboro is also the destination of several day-charter boats from all over Mount Desert Island, and on the second Saturday in August, it is the site of a Lobster Festival. This annual festival is the busiest time of the year for the island, when more than 500 lobsters are boiled up for visitors, along with homemade pies and other culinary treats.

"Downeast Maine," along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a variable climate that can change quickly at any time. This area, which includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, has four distinct seasons where summer temperatures can range from 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Fog is quite common during the summer months, as well, but there is also plenty of sunshine. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter rain in any month, and ice storms are regular in the winter and early spring. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow tends to melt quickly along the coast - more continuous snow can be found inland.
