Tremont
is located on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island, or the southwestern portion, which is opposite the busiest section of the island that includes well-known Bar Harbor. Tremont and West Tremont are both small, quiet communities, with the villages of Bass Harbor, Bernard, Gotts Island and Seal Cove also included in the township of Tremont. The population of the whole area is about 1,500. Mount Desert Island is home to Acadia National Park, one of the oldest and most scenic national parks in the country. The whole island is a photographer's dream with its' winding roads, lighthouses, craggy cliffs and pebblestone beaches and spectacular coastline. Activities in and near Tremont include boating and fishing, island cruises, sloop charters, sea kayaking, whale watching, hiking and biking. Tremont and the other island communities have antique shops and quaint gift shops galore, and plenty of dining on fresh crabs and lobster - right from the boat. Winter is one of the most beautiful seasons on Mount Desert Island and offers cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, ice skating and carriage rides along groomed trails. If enjoying the indoors is more your style, try relaxing beside a roaring fire with a good book, or visit the Mount Desert Island Oceanarium, The Gilley Museum and the Seal Cove Auto Museum.

"Downeast Maine," along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a variable climate that can change quickly at any time. This area, which includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, has four distinct seasons where summer temperatures can range from 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Fog is quite common during the summer months, as well, but there is also plenty of sunshine. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter rain in any month, and ice storms are regular in the winter and early spring. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow tends to melt quickly along the coast - more continuous snow can be found inland.
