Denmark
is a small community of approximately 1,000 residents, located in the western part of the state, in the area known as the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region. The many lakes and ponds of this region provide lots of recreational opportunities, making Denmark a four-season vacation/resort area. Most of the major lakes and ponds have public swimming areas (keep in mind fall comes early to Maine and the waters do cool down considerably.) Boat ramps, boat rentals and other watercraft are also available. The fishing near Denmark is excellent, and canoeing and kayaking are other fun summertime sports. Hiking and biking are other popular activities, with numerous trails to tackle - for families with small children all the way up to strenuous hikes for the more advanced. Come fall, the area makes a dramatic transformation as the green colors of the woods and hills turn brilliant reds, yellow, orange and gold. Leaves start changing in mid to late September and peak about the middle of October. Winter in Denmark is not to be outdone however. As the temperature drops, the area becomes a playground for snowmobilers, ice fishing, cross-country skiing and ice-skating. Downhill skiing is also available at nearby Shawnee Park. The Musher's Bowl brings sled dog racers to Denmark in the first weekend in February, and the Winter Carnival is held in conjunction with this event.

Western Maine near the New Hampshire state line enjoy four distinct seasons that typifies the best of a New England climate. There's plenty of clear, sunny weather with cool nights in the summertime, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. Extreme humidity in summertime is usually not a problem because temperatures are so mild. Fall is spectacular - crisp, mild days and cold nights, perfect for sightseeing. Winter begins in Maine around Thanksgiving, with January and February being the coldest months. The average annual snowfall is around 85 inches and winter temperatures vary from the mid-30s to below zero. Most snowfall occurs in eight to ten measurable storms of 6 inches to a foot. In the last fifteen years, the largest single snowstorm amount was 16 inches. Temperatures begin to increase in March, along with an increase in humidity, which often results in snowstorms until mid-April.
