Augusta has been the state capital of Maine since 1827, when it was chosen just six years after the state was admitted to the Union. The lovely Capitol building serves as the centerpiece for this busy town that is the center for the business, government and commerce of the state. Augusta is located northeast of Portland, between Brunswick and Waterville along the banks of the Kennebec River and near Cobbosseecontee Lake. It is small by comparison to many other state Capitals, with a population of only around 20,000. Yet Augusta remains a world-class city with a wide variety of attractions and services to offer visitors. The city of Augusta has beautiful natural scenery, historical and cultural sites and recreational opportunities along the beautiful Kennebec River and in nearby state parks. Damariscotta Lake State Park is just a short drive and is one of midcoast Maine’s most popular day use parks with swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and picnicking. Just twelve miles from the state capital is Peacock Beach State Park, which offers a very nice beach and swimming area that is staffed with lifeguards in the summer months. Other Augusta attractions include tours of Blaine House, which is the Governor’s Mansion and the Lovejoy Bridge in nearby Andover, Maine’s shortest covered bridge at just over 70 feet.

Augusta Weather & Climate

The south-central portion of Maine, just north of Augusta, has four delightful seasons with spectacular foliage in the autumn months. The overall climate is moderate with summer daytime temperatures in the 70s and low 80s, and cool nights. Winters are cold but usually not frigid. Spring and autumn are mild during the day, with crisp, cool nights. The really cold weather begins arriving around the end of November with January and February generally having the lowest temperatures. Below zero temperatures are possible, but not the norm. Accumulating snow is a possibility into March and early April, but the warmer days of spring generally means it melts fast. Rain can occur anytime of the year.
