Rockport
is a small village nestled on the scenic western shore of Penobscot Bay on the rugged north Atlantic coast. Home to Rockport College and the International Maine Photographic Workshops; this picturesque region has drawn artists, photographers and writers for generations. Rockport was the location for the Mel Gibson film, "Man Without a Face," and nearby Rockland was the setting for the movie, "In the Bedroom." Vast stretches of wilderness extend westward to the Canadian border from Rockport, and small fishing villages and sparsely inhabited offshore islands dot the area. Although remote, this quiet coastal village is not inaccessible. It's less than four hours drive from Boston on Route 1, the main tourist route up the Maine coast. Rockport is a short drive to the Camden Hills Recreational Facility and many lakes and ponds in the area provide swimming, sailing, fishing, and ice skating and skiing. The towns of Camden and Rockland are nearby, with a variety of museums and art galleries, shops, restaurants, theaters, music concerts and plays. Rockport is only two and a half-hours from Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park and about two hours from the Portland International Airport.

The southern coast of Maine near the Penobscot Bay has very comfortable summers and falls, cold winters with frequent thaws and late, changeable springs. Summers are mild to cool by most people's standards, with very few summer nights too warm and humid for sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days along the coast and is perfect for fall sightseeing. Winters are cold, but not as severe as the northeastern part of the state along the Canadian border. The White Mountains, to the northwest, keep considerable snow from reaching the Portland area and also help moderate the temperature. Normal precipitation is remarkably uniform throughout the year. Winds are generally light with the strongest being in the months of March and November. Temperatures well below freezing are reported each year, and cold waves sometimes come along with strong winds. Blizzards are possible but infrequent in Maine.
