Mount-Vernon
is a small rural town located in western Kennebec County about twenty miles northwest of Augusta. Many of the families that live here have roots going back for generations, while in recent years more retirees and professionals have relocated to the area to enjoy the fresh air and clean lakes. About one third of the town's homes are vacation properties that are clustered around the lake frontage of Parker Pond, Echo Lake, Long Pond, Torsey Pond, Flying Pond, Taylor Pond and several other smaller ponds. The village of Mount Vernon has a small commercial district with several small gift shops, a country store that sells almost anything you might need, a post office, community center and a few other businesses. The hamlet of West Mount Vernon is situated in the southwestern part of town between Echo Lake and Taylor Pond. The hamlet of Dunn's Corner is located at the southeastern corner of Mount Vernon. The activity in the town greatly increases in the summer months, beginning around the 4th of July. The many lakes in the area provide lots of opportunities for swimming, boating and fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Hiking and biking are also available and golf is nearby. Other attractions in Mount Vernon include the old Grist Mill, Castle Island, Wings Mills Dam and "The Chimney" which is located in West Mount Vernon and is what is left of a tannery built in 1881. If you tire of the peace and quiet, the city of Augusta is just a short drive and offers shopping, fine dining, theater and nightlife.

The south-central portion of Maine, just north of Augusta, has four delightful seasons with spectacular foliage in the autumn months. The overall climate is moderate with summer daytime temperatures in the 70s and low 80s, and cool nights. Winters are cold but usually not frigid. Spring and autumn are mild during the day, with crisp, cool nights. The really cold weather begins arriving around the end of November with January and February generally having the lowest temperatures. Below zero temperatures are possible, but not the norm. Accumulating snow is a possibility into March and early April, but the warmer days of spring generally means it melts fast. Rain can occur anytime of the year.
