Georgetown
is a historic island village located on mid-coast Maine, south of Augusta and near the town of Bath. Incorporated in 1716, Georgetown was the 10th town to incorporate in Maine, and today it has an area of 18.5 square miles and 83 miles of beautiful shoreline. It stretches down a long peninsula and offers breathtaking views of the coastline, bays, lighthouses and ocean. Hiking trails abound in the area, fishing is superb, and biking and canoeing, birdwatching and beachcombing are other ways to spend your time in this island town. The tiny village of Five Islands is close by, and is reputed to have the best lobster in Maine. You can rent a boat and eat clams and lobster right off the fishermen's dock, or visit nearby Reid Park for a picnic overlooking the dramatic cliffs and beaches of the North Atlantic Ocean. The Josephine Newman Wildlife Sanctuary is a 400-acre park located in Georgetown, at a point where the woods meet the shoreline. It has awesome views of the coast and is a great place for birdwatching and hiking. It's free to the public and is open daily from dawn to dusk. A few of the many other nearby attractions includes the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Boothbay Harbor's boat tours, and shopping and antiquing in the many towns and villages along Maine's scenic mid-coastline.
