Fort-Kent is a small town located in Aroostook County in northern Maine, and offers a wide variety of activities all throughout the year. In wintertime, northern Maine offers some of the best-groomed snowmobile trails in the U.S. With hundreds of miles of trails and over 150 inches of snow per year, Fort Kent is a snowmobiler's paradise. The Lonesome Pine Trails is within walking distance of downtown Fort Kent, and has 13 trails for Alpine and Nordic skiing, as well as snowboarding. Skiers and boarders can enjoy spectacular views of Canada, St. John River Valley and the town of Fort Kent from the well-groomed trails. Summertime brings fishing, boating and camping to the "Maine North Woods" region, as well as hiking, biking, horseback riding and golf. Aroostook County has a strong French-Acadian heritage, and there are several special events throughout the year to celebrate the history of the area, such as the Acadian Festival. Other events near Fort Kent include the Potato Blossom Festival and the Can-Am Dog Sled Races. Also of interest is the Fort Kent Historic Site. This fort, named for former Maine governor Edward Kent, was built in 1839 and consists of a wooden blockhouse made of hand-hewn timber. It is located at the confluence of the St. John and Fish Rivers, and has picnic facilities and campsites.

Fort Kent Weather & Climate

The Maine North Woods region in the northeast corner of the state borders the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec. The four-season climate is punctuated by sharp changes in the weather. Northern Maine has cold to frigid winters with over 150 inches of snow per year, making it one of the best regions in the state for skiing and snowmobiling. As the days grow longer in March, the snow begins to recede. However, snowstorms can still occur until mid-April, although it does not usually stay on the ground for long. Summers are delightful with mild to warm daytime temperatures and cool evenings - nothing but fresh air, plenty of sunshine and more than 2,000 lakes, streams and rivers for outdoor recreation. Autumn in northern Maine has glorious displays of fall foliage along with crisp, cool mornings, bright sunny days and cold nights. Rainfall is moderate and can occur anytime of the year, although summer is generally the rainy season.
