Moosehead-Lake
is known as the "Gateway to the North Maine Woods." It is the single largest body of freshwater in the New England states and has 400 miles of beautiful forested shoreline. The Moosehead Lake region has become one of New England's most popular tourist destinations and it's easy to see why. The lake and mountains, and the nearby rivers, waterfalls and streams offer an array of activities such as swimming, boating, fly fishing, white water rafting, canoeing and kayaking, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing and birdwatching and the list goes on and on. It's a four-season recreational area, with fishing and hunting and photography being tops in fall, and in wintertime, there is cross-country skiing, sledding, and snowmobiling at Moosehead Lake, and downhill skiing at Big Squaw Mountain just eight miles away. The area has many wonderful hiking trails, including the beginning of the Appalachian Trail. Camping is available along the lake's shores, and a four-star inn is also located right along Moosehead Lake's shoreline. A few of the more unique adventures at Moosehead Lake include float-plane tours, a ride on a historic steamship and guided moose safaris. It's quickly becoming a popular destination for eco-tourists and nature lovers due to its' wide variety of wildlife including moose, deer, otter, beaver, loons, hawks and bald eagles. The nearby town of Greenville offers restaurants, antiques, local crafts and gift shops, and Moosehead Lake is just over an hour from Bangor and two and a half hours from Portland.

Moosehead Lake Weather & Climate

Maine offers four distinct seasons. In the Katahdin Region there is plenty of clear, sunny weather in summer, with nights cool enough to provide a welcome relief from the warm days. Brisk days and cool nights in September prepare for what is the favorite season for many in Maine - the spectacular colors of fall. Temperatures continue to cool through October and November, and the really cold weather settles in around Thanksgiving. Below zero temperatures are possible in January and February, but usually do not last for any long period of time. Snow is usually continuously on the ground from December through February. Temperatures begin to increase in March, with a corresponding increase in humidity. The northern area receives approximately 85 inches of snow a year, most of it occurring in eight to ten measurable storms per year.
