Cape-Neddick
is a small beachside community located seven miles north of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and just a few minutes north of York Beach on the southern coast of Maine. Easy day trips from Cape Neddick include visiting the shopping outlets of Kittery, Maine, just ten minutes south, or a twenty-minute drive north takes you to the quaint village of Kennebunkport. As of the 2000 census, Cape Neddick had a population of 2,997 residents. It is home to Cape Neddick Beach and the Cape Neddick Lighthouse (also called "the Nubble," which refers to the barren rocky island on which it sits, just off shore.) Built in 1879, the Nubble is the southernmost of Maine's lighthouses. The 41-foot tower flashes red every six seconds and is visible for 13 miles. Cape Neddick is an extremely windy point, but it is easy to photograph the lighthouse from a point at the end of Nubble Road out of the town of York. There is a restaurant located at Cape Neddick where you can get a table that gives a clear view of the lighthouse's flashing red light only a hundred yards away. From Cape Neddick, it is also possible to view the Boon Island Light, nine miles offshore. A wide variety of activities are available in the area, including antique shopping, visiting nearby historical sites, national and state parks, birdwatching, hiking and biking, deep sea fishing, whale watching, kayaking, horseback riding and snowshoeing.

The southwestern tip of Maine, just across the New Hampshire state line, enjoys a four-season climate without the frigid temperatures of the northeastern part of the state. While the weather can change quickly in Maine (from sunny to stormy,) the seasons are pretty predictable. Fall is a favorite time of the year for many, with mild sunny days and crisp cool nights. With its proximity to the ocean, this part of Maine enjoys mild summers with cool ocean breezes and temperatures that rarely go over 80 degrees. Rain is possible anytime of the year. Visitors should come prepared for anything - temperatures in Maine have been known to swing 20 degrees in less than an hour. At times, the wind along the coast picks up, making it seem even cooler.
